New Term - starts Tuesday 10th January

Happy New Year. Hope you have had a great break and are looking forward to the new term.

Term is due to start back on Tuesday 10th January - next week for a nine week term.

Class dates will be 10/1, 17/1, 31/1, 7/2, 21/2, 28/2, 13/3, 20/3 and 27/3.

The dates we won't have classes are ; 14th February during half term break and two parents nights ;24th January and 6th March.

Fees will be payable on the night for a term of 9 weeks.

Please could I ask that you check your emails on the day of classes as if they have to be cancelled due to extreme weather or tutor unavailability I will have to do that from work. Some of the tutors may have gigs at Celtic Connections and rehearsals for them.

We have great news that we are once again hosting a St Andrews concert and family ceilidh in partnership with the Tolbooth Stirling as part of the wider Scotlands Winter Festival. This will be on Saturday 26th November in Killearn Village Hall.
We are delighted that the fabulous Shetland Fiddler Jenna Reid (now member of Blazin Fiddles) and band will be performing in Killearn.
Get Reelers will once again be supporting the main act by playing a few tunes at the beginning of the concert and we will be encouraging as many of the children to play in the performance.
Tickets £8/£4 and posters are being sent to us shortly so if you can help ; putting up posters in your village, selling tickets, sourcing raffle prizes please let us know. We hope as many of you will come along and sell as many tickets as possible to family and friends for what we are sure will be a great night - it was a sell out last year.

We have been told that we cannot hold classes on the 18th October as there is a parents night that night. So this now means that our new term will not start until 25th October.
The next 6 week block will therefore be from 25th October until 6th December (excluding 8th November in service day)

Dear members and new beginners,

Please find below information on classes, times, instrument hire and fees for the start of term next week.

Classes start next week Tuesday 30th August 2011

Childrens Classes in Fiddle, Guitar and Whistle
at Balfron High School Maths Department.

Information for New Beginners

On arrival at the High School Reception please look for our table to the left where you will be be asked to sign the Fire Register (including parents/carers and other siblings) and given directions up to the Maths Department or asked to follow the arrows we will put in place from Reception.

When you arrive in the Maths Department there will be the main Get Reel desk where you will get any information you require and be asked to complete a registration form, arrange instrument hire and sign your child in.

On a weekly basis unless otherwise agreed we will expect you to sign your child in and out at this desk before and after class and we will not let them leave the Maths Department until they are collected. Get Reel cannot be responsible for your child elsewhere in the building other than the Maths Department. We also have to ask you to make sure your children are as quiet as possible and not allowed to run about to and from the classes as there are other users ; especially a yoga class in the building at this time.

There is an option to wait in the break out space in the Maths Department during the classes but most parents/carers choose to use the facilities downstairs at the Sports Hall/Pool.
* Please could New Beginners arrive at least ten minutes before their class is due to start to aid administration.

Instrument Hire - Get Reel have fiddles - sizes half, three quarters and full as well as guitars half and full size for hire. Costs £10/term.

New beginners classes starting on Tuesday 30th August 2011.

An outline of what we are proposing is shown below. This is based on keeping the kids with their schoolmates and more importantly to help sharing/arranging lifts for those of you who live outwith Balfron.

We know that there are many clubs and activities after school on a Tuesday and if these times would present a problem for you please could you let us know as soon as possible so that we can get the classes sorted before the end of this term.

CLASS TIMES

Guitar - Absolute Beginners 4 - 4.40pm for Balfron pupils mainly

Guitar - Absolute Beginner 4.40 - 5.20 for Buchlyvie, Buchanan/Drymen, Fintry and Kippen pupils.

Guitar - Improving Beginners - 5.20 - 6 for kids that have already been learning

Guitar - Intermediates 4.40 - 5.20pm - for kids with over 2 years experience

Fiddle - Absolute Beginners 4.40 - 5.20pm

Whistle - Absolute Beginners 4 - 4.40pm

Please let us know if there are any other ability levels you are interested in.

Currently we have the following tutors for kids ; 2 guitar, 2 fiddle and 1 whistle.

It may interest you that in the evening we run adult classes in fiddle, guitar and mandolin.
Occasionally we have taster sessions for other instruments to assess demand for a class.
Get Reel run a programme of events and often work in partnership with The Tolbooth in Stirling to hold ceilidhs and concerts at which our members are all encouraged to perform. We support Feis Fhoirt and other similar organisations by encouraging our members to attend their workshops and events throughout the year.

Get Reel BBQ at Carolines Barn on Tuesday 7th June from 6pm - 9pm

This is to confirm that our classes have now stopped for the summer. However...

Get Reel are having a BBQ and session at Carolines Barn on Tuesday 7th June from 6pm - 9pm latest.
Apologies for the late notice.

We hope that you can come along, bring your families, partners etc for what is hoped to be a lovely evening socialising and listening/playing some tunes.
Please could you confirm that you will be coming and the number in your party.
We will then get back to you with the directions to the barn, parking arrangements and what people are bringing towards the food (* see below)
There is a lovely garden with lots of interest, animals and space for kids to run around.

This will be a BYO event - we will have a half barrel BBQ which will be lit at 6pm using wood and then coals put on top - this will be for shared cooking.
If you don't fancy this then please bring your own disposable one. In addition to your own meat or veggie options please let me know if you can bring something for sharing * ; a bowl of salad, pudding, napkins, tomato sauce, rolls etc and I will compile a list for circulation to all those coming along so we don't end up with too many duplicates.

Fees and Summer term events /dates for your diary

Dear Members,

Further to my email regarding new term dates the ''Get Reel'' Committee has made the necessary decision to raise fees for the coming term. This is due to a downturn in numbers at the moment and increased expenditure as well as the fact that fees have been static for some time now. We really hope this will not be a problem to anyone who values what “Get Reel” does and aspires to do and hope that our decision to raise fees by an extra pound or two a week does not make the cost prohibitive to anyone continuing with us.

New costs for this term are:

Kids: £36.00 i.e. £6 /week
Adults: £60 / £10 week or concession £48.00 / £8

Please note all fees must be paid on the first day of the new term. Cash, or a cheque made payable to “Get Reel” will be acceptable.

Summer term events /dates for your diary:

April 26th - classes resume at Balfron Campus for kids and Caroline’s barn at Branshogle Farm on the Fintry Road* for adults.
*Directions - from the Fintry/Balfron junction follow road for mile or so past a lodge, round a couple of bends and then down to bridge and then up past a sawmill on the right, look for sign for Old Hall on right. Immediately opposite this on the left is the farm road with a sign and a cottage to the right , follow this road down past cottage and a house and take left fork over cattle grid and park at the barn or turn and park along drive)

May - Primary school concerts to promote our classes will take place on:

3rd - Balfron Primary
10th - Fintry and Buchlyvie Primary
24th - Drymen and Buchanan Primary

These will consist of Barry and Ruairidh giving a short concert and promotional presentation to P5, 6 and 7 in each of the schools. We hope to get some new comers to ''Get Reel'' from these. This will be funded through our development fund and generous sponsorship from Killearn Hoolie for the purchase of instruments.

May 31st - end of summer term

June 7th – BBQ and “Come and Try” Event for members and potential newcomers to our classes. Venue tbc.

July/August - If we get enough interest from our Primary school promotions, we may run a 1 day Summer School type event as a keeping in touch day.

August 30th - new autumn term starts.
Classes will not run during the October week holiday (week beginning the 10th) and the November in service day (Tuesday 8th).

November -26th St Andrew’s Night Concert with Barry Reid and friends ( one of our Tutors ) as the band and Get Reelers performing.

November -29th end of term.

We hope you all had a good Spring Break and look forward to seeing you back at classes on Tuesday for what we hope will be a busy, productive and enjoyable term.

AGM - Tuesday 2nd February 2011

Hi all,

Just to confirm that our postponed AGM is on Tuesday 2nd February 2011 at 6pm in the Maths Department, Balfron High School. If you could come along we will get through the formal proceedings as soon as possible and get on to the important business of hearing members opinions and ideas for the future.

Please can you put some thought to the future of Get Reel as we are now looking to be potentially making a loss over time and have to rethink how we manage the classes. In particular we are considering how to manage the childrens classes and looking into the idea of a combination of groupwork classes and instrumental lessons. We are also looking for a new treasurer as well as volunteers to help on a Tuesday from 4-6pm.

KIDS GROUPWORK - TUESDAYS 16th NOVEMBER AND 23RD NOVEMBER -4.40-5.20pm
There will be a groupwork class for these 2 Tuesdays from 4.40-5.20 pm. Please could you try and make arrangements for your child to come along to this before or after their normal class. If your child normally has class at this time their class will run as usual unless the tutor decides the class join in the groupwork for some of the time. The aim is to get as many of the kids playing tunes together and we really hope they will be keen to come along and play with the big Get Reel group at the start of the concert/ceilidh on the 27th November. NO KIDS CLASSES TUESDAY 9TH NOVEMBER - this is an inservice day and the kids are off till 8th - 10th.

Get Reel constitution - What is Get Reel?

Get Reel is an association to promote traditional arts in south west rural Stirlingshire.

The Association's objects are:
to advance education, in particular by promoting the performance, learning, and appreciation of Scottish traditional music and its contemporary development, the understanding of its links with other cultural and artistic traditions, particularly those of song, dance and storytelling; and to act as a conduit for these traditions.

The full details of what Get Reel is about can be read in the attached constitution.

Killearn Hoolie Sat 12 June.

Thanks to all who played in the main tent at the Killearn Hoolie (Sara, Colin, Kath, Moira and John Coletta). It was a great experience for me playing various sets that we have rehearsed in the past. I now realise how much we have done and developed over the last couple of years.

Good to see John Coletta again and great fun to play along with him on an impromptu 'Bad Moon Risin' right in the middle of the session.

It's hard to believe we've almost come to the end of another year of classes and we
would like to thank all our young people for all their hard work. The wonderful
sunny weather means that everyone wants to get outside and 'play' and so we
really hope to see you at some of our gatherings over the summer for a few tunes.
You will receive more about this by email.

THANKS TO ALL OUR TUTORS
We would especially like to thank our great team of tutors ; Ruraidh Campbell,
Barry Reid, John Coletta and Abigail Lightbody as well as trainees Kath Muldowney
and Yvonne Bauwens for all their dedication and passing on their skills. Not
forgetting the wonderful covering tutors we have had ; Mike Bryan, Alan Train and
Jenn Butterworth.

RECENT EVENTS
Our Get Reel group had a very successful gig at the Fintry Festival on Sunday night
supporting Chris Stout and Catriona Mackay. Well done all you sounded and looked
great.

KILLEARN HOOLIE SATURDAY 12TH JUNE - 12-4
We hope as many of you as possible will come along to the Glebe in Killearn and
bring your instruments for a tune in the marquee. Please let Sara know if you can

As you know we have been trying to get groupwork going every 3-4weeks over the
year and this has been relatively successful. We aim to build on this for next year
and are planning a concert and ceilidh featuring all the young people in November.

The organiser, Andy Kelso, has asked Get Reel to play on the Sunday evening of the Fintry Music Festival as an opener to Chris Stout and Catriona MacKay !!!

I would also remind you of the event Abi has arranged at the Courtyard Cafe Fintry on Saturday 22nd May. A get together starting at 1pm till 3pm. I would encourge all of you who are playing on Sunday 24th to be at this - could be a good extra rehearsal for us !!

Get Reelers Moira, Colin, Adrian, Jo and Richard travelled to Crianlarich for a weekend of walking and music sessions on Friday and Saturday 23/24th April at the Ochils Mountaineering Club cottage. We were joined by some of the Ochils club members including Elke, Sheila, Ian and Jim so we had a good mix of guitars, whistles, fiddles, ukeles and a bhodran.

Both Friday and Saturday evening sessions were great and led by Sheila Airth's excellent fiddle play. On Saturday Adrian completed a 100 mile cycle run and the rest of us enjoyed a walk up Ben Challum in good weather. Saturday evening began with a meal in the Crianlarich Hotel - highly recommended.

TUTOR TRAINING WEEKEND – GET REEL

On a cold but bright Friday night in February, Abi Lightbody and myself, set off for a tutor training weekend run by Feisean nan Gaidheal at the Gaelic college on Skye – Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.

We went along to the weekend not knowing what to expect and arrived at registration on the Saturday morning with some fear and trepidation. However, that soon disappeared when we met the main tutors running our course, Andy Thorburn and Val Bryan. They very quickly put us at our ease which in turn allowed us to get the most out of the weekend.

Val and Andy soon had us deep in discussion on teaching techniques, preparation and the many practical issues that arise when tutoring classes. We also covered some great ice breaking techniques, warm ups, and musical games. One of these had us all on the floor passing drumsticks to each other! Great fun and very useful – honest!

We also attended a very enlighting session on child protection given by Susan and a session giving us a taster of the Gaelic language with Gilleasbuig.

Day one ended with dinner and a great music session held in the old barn which went into the wee small hours !

Day two was a practical day of music and song where we were split into groups and had to teach each other new material, mainly in the tradition of learning and teaching by ear, which we then had to come back and perform in the afternoon.

The weekend ended with the issue of some very welcome and well earned certificates and thanks to the team.

I know Abi and I have benefited greatly by completing this course. We are returning to ‘Get Reel’ with new skills, lots of information and techniques to make our classes even more enjoyable and productive. This training follows on from training already completed with music leaders in the Stirling area.

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is a wonderful resource on Skye. The setting is stunning and we were very lucky to have a beautiful, cold, but clear weekend of weather to enjoy it. We received a lovely warm welcome and brilliant co-ordination from Iona MacDonald for Feisean nan Gaidheal and excellent tuition from Andy, Val, Gilleasbuig and Susan.

We thank them all very much for organizing such a great course and making us so welcome on it. We look forward to going back next year to complete the next level!

‘Get Reel’ welcomes new members. If you are out there and have always wanted to learn how to play the fiddle, guitar or whistle, whether you be child or adult - come and see us. It’s never too late to start and it’s great fun trying!

Classes are run on Tuesday evenings during term time at Balfron High School. We work with experienced tutors, including, Ruiaridh Campbell of Angus Lyon and Ruiaridh Campbell fame, Mike Vass of Malinky fame and Barry Reid of Treacherous Orchestra fame, as well as our trainee tutors. Celtic Connections 2010 has many things on offer to suit all tastes and I am sure, like me, you all have a brochure and/or have visited the web site and are booking some concerts and workshops.
Mike Vass, our esteemed fiddle tutor is performing in 'New Voices' on Sunday 24th January at 1pm in the Strathclyde Suite of the Concert Hall - tickets £10.50. I'm thinking this would be a good one to do as a 'Get Reel' outing. The afternoon show lends itself well to us going out for tea afterwards. Last year Sartis in Bath Street went down well and we could go there again if everyone is happy with this. I suggest people get their own tickets and let me know by e-mail if they would like to be included in the numbers for the restaurant and I'll book the table. Please be advised this is an extremely busy time for restaurants in Glasgow and if we want a table we have to be quick. Could you please let me know by 29th December if you are going.

Barry Reid our equally esteemed guitar tutor is playing on Saturday 23rd January in the 'Treacherous Orchestra' in the Old Fruitmarket at 9pm - tickets £16.00 (This is a standing event - no seats !). Again, get your own tickets and if there's enough interest in going in a group, dinner first somewhere could be included. Again, let me know by 29th December.

Thanks to Mike Vass and David Wood for the excellent ceilidh music There were also some great performances on stage from the Get Reelers on fiddle and the young guitarists. The adult guitarists will need to come with their instruments next time!

Get Reel on stage at the Tolbooth

Get Reel took the stage to open the Malinky concert at the Tolbooth in Stirling on Thursday 12th November and had a great time.

First up were Angus, Rhiannon and Janey. The youngsters were fearless to go on stage first and played a superb set of Superfly and Och is Dune Traigh Mi (Poor Man).

The adults followed with trepidation and played their 2 sets and even got the audience clapping along. First set was Burning of the Pipers Hut, Mr Baillie and the Barrowburn Reel followed by Lament for the Death of the Rev. Archie Beaton, Cavers of Kirkcudbright (Mike's tune) and Jig of Slurs.
Felt great afterwards and those that stayed really enjoyed the Malinky concert.

Old Mill Sessions: We propose to go to the Old Mill for a few tunes after our Tuesday night class on the following dates: 22nd September, 20th October, 1st December - so get your baby sitters organised and join in.

Bodhran Taster Session: At Balfron High School evening Tues 11th November.

Gig at the Tolbooth: Malinky are playing at the Tolbooth - Thursday 12th November and Mike has invited Get Reel to be the support act for this. (very exciting - all on board for this one I hope !!)

Get Reel AGM: 17th November. Venue and time will be advised.

Fiddle 2009: Great weekend festival of fiddle playing in Edinburgh 13 to 15th Nov. All the information you need will be on the Web site. I read somewhere that they have slow sessions at this so may be worth going along for a few tunes.

St Andrews Night Ceilidh: To take place in the Village Hall in Killearn on Saturday 28th November for a St Andrews Night bash. Details still have to be worked out, but keep the date free for now and we'll keep you posted.

GET REEL NEW TERM
Term dates - 1st Sept for 12 weeks excluding Tuesday 13th October.
Childrens and Adult classes will start on Tuesday 1st September 2009 and ALL take place at Balfron Campus. The adult class sizes have outgrown home venues we have used up till now (7-8.30)
The adults classes will meet informally as a group on Tues 25th at Carolines barn.Directions will be sent to all newcomers in a follow up email.

ALL PLEASE NOTE that new security systems are in place at Balfron Campus and so we will now have our Registration and sign in desk every week at main reception.There are also new traffic arrangements in place so we all have to park in the car parks not in bus bays, or round access road. Please allow time for this before class starts.

NEW CHILDRENS BEGINNERS CLASSES
We have names for beginners for guitar and fiddle and will start whistle 4-4.40pm if we have enough interest. Times will be confirmed in a follow up email but are likely to be fiddle and whistle 4.00 - 4.40 and guitar 5.20 - 6pm.

NEW GROUPWORK ELEMENT
We are now hoping to introduce a groupwork element to the classes every 4th week and this would be in the middle class slot 4.40-5.20pm for children. We hope that you can allow you child to attend both their normal class and the groupwork. Please can you indicate asap if your child can attend this. We intend to ask the children affected in the middle slots to go into an earlier or later class every 4th week /or only come to groupwork and hope that this will be considered worthwhile to get everyone playing together.

FORTHCOMING FUNDRAISING CONCERT FOR FEIS FHOIRT THURSDAY 27TH AUGUST

Please note forthcoming concert on Thurs 27 August at Victoria Halls, Dunblane, featuring lots of local young trad musicians including a Riverside group - come and support them. Fundraiser for Feis Fhoirt

Sara says following on from the great night at Fintry as our agent we have another gig for you in August. It is a fundraiser for Feis Fhoirt (Feis Forth) which is a new Feis for 8-18yrs old only this time! - however whilst Get Reel are not represented on the committee we are as associates they have plenty of parents involved. The dates for the Feis weekend is 12th and 13th of September at the Camelon Education Centre in Falkirk. So keep that free if you have kids that would be interested. She will email a poster soon for folks to help circulate and confirm gig date.! it'd be great if you could do your 3 sets again.

COMMITTEE MEETING 2ND JUNE

We are all going to have a Committee meeting after the last official Get Reel on 2nd June AT THE OLD MILL ,maybe or in the barn? Discussion will include: admin help, events, programme for summer sessions/BBQ's hopefully lots!!!, blog site, funding applications..

7th JUNE GATHERIN -TRAINING PROJECT - KILLEARN VILLAGE HALL 3-6PM

Please could you all let me know if you can make this date as we have got some Riverside and Blackford folks planning on coming along and it'd be great if we can have a programme of mixture of session, each group playing, ceilidh as well as organise a series of workshops using other spaces with the trainee tutors - hopefully there will be at least one each for fiddles, guitars and whistles. individual lessons might even be possible.

MONDAY 15TH JUNE

Training Project evaluation meeting - this has been going well with Kath and Abi being involved with shadowing Ruaridh and helping teach each week at the kids classes. We hope Kath will get some practice this Tuesday evening for a while teaching you all a tune in common with the other groups on the project.

9th and 16th JUNE - Training Project..

I am proposing a couple more adult class weeks (without tutors!) as it be good for Kath and Abi to get some more teaching practice in and just generally all getting together socially. I will check with Caroline if you are all up for that. Perhaps guitars happy to get together and have a self help night!.

Rural Blend Concert - Saturday 15th March

Thanks to Lori and Innes Watson for providing us with the workshop sessions on fiddle and guitar on Saturday afternoon.

In the evening, the Get Reel AllStars made an appearance on stage at the McLintock Hall, Balfron. This was part of the Rural Blend Festival organised by the Tolbooth, Stirling.

Once our slot was over the professionals took over. First twins, Mike and Ali Vass treated us to a stirring set, playing the unusual combination of fiddle and piano.

After a short break, Lori Watson and the Rule of Three stormed the stage and treated us to traditional and experimental music from the borders. The trio of fiddle, accordion and a unique guitar playing style had the Balfron audience wondering how their small rural village had secured such a fine line-up.

GET REEL UPDATE - DECEMBER 2007

Thank you to you all for your hard work over the last term. We hope you have enjoyed the classes and look forward to welcoming you back in January 2008. The term dates will be 15th Jan – 25th March (excluding 25th Jan and 12th Feb).

Please could you confirm your intention to return next term by returning the attached slip (clicking this link will download a pdf form you can print off) to Sara Bell, 11 Rowan Crescent, Killearn, G63 9RZ before 18th December. This will enable us to plan for the forthcoming term.

There is likely to be some changes made to the times and students in each guitar class. Please let us know if a change of time would affect your child’s attendance.

Get Reel, a registered Scottish Charity, has been providing classes for children and adults in traditional music: fiddle, guitar and whistle as well as drama/storytelling since August 2004 based at Balfron High School.

We have a team of experienced tutors, a dedicated voluntary committee and also volunteer tutors and helpers who have been vetted through Disclosure Scotland.

*Drama classes, currently 4 - 5pm (P1 to P4) and 5 - 6pm (P4 to P7) are open to children aged 5 in Primary 1 and above. Instrumental classes are for children aged 8 in Primary 4 and above.

Background to Get Reel

Get Reel was established in September 2003. We owe our formation to outreach work carried out by Glasgow Fiddle Workshop (GFW) who agreed with their administrator, who just happens to live in Killearn and is Get Reels first chairperson, to sponsor the Killearn Gala Day in June 2003 with a stepdance and fiddle demonstration and workshop. Get Reel really is a GFW baby.
